A ritual design for IDE Graduation
Xiaodi Tang & Sijie Tong
Graduation ceremony should be a memorable moment in students’ life. Currently, the graduation ceremonies are held for IDE (Industrial Design Engineering) master students individually, unlike other universities that organize a big ceremony event which all graduates are invited to attend.
We found that many students who have graduated from IDE felt hard to gain the sense of togetherness in their graduation ceremony, especially the connection between the faculty and themselves. Through our design, we intend to enhance this kind of emotional bond, indicating that every student is an important member of the IDE faculty now and after graduation, because of we “design for our future” together. When students recall their graduation ceremony, they will feel it is not an end but a shiny start full of hope and ambition as a young designer.

This ritual is designed for master students at IDE faculty in TU Delft. Students will receive an IDE Time Capsule after they pass Green Light assessment from the graduation committee. They should fill in the template before thesis presentation and hand it back to the committee in their graduation ceremony.
Socio-Cultural Dimension

Comparing to the group ceremony in other universities, the value of togetherness is missing. We want to enhance the spiritual connection between students and IDE, even after graduation. The new ritual will make students feel IDE is by their side now and in the future. Every graduate student will be required to conduct this ritual, because we intend to add more value of duty, indicating that students should be responsible for their future journey.

Template
Capsule shell
IDE Time Capsule

The template guides students to think about the future of themselves as well as IDE faculty. They can write and draw on the paper and put it into the capsule shell.
After students hand in IDE Time Capsule at their graduation ceremony, IDE faculty will scan the filled template and email it to students on the same day 10 years later, also a party invitation from alumni association will be attached. This part is going to enhance the feeling of long-term togetherness between IDE faculty and IDE students.
